Math 2b Uci Suggested Homework Policies

This website provides information and resources for the UCI Calculus courses, Math 2A and Math 2B. Please consult your instructor's syllabus and course webpage for more complete details about your particular section.

Course Textbook

The textbook for Math 2A and 2B is:

MATH 2A/2B: Calculus: Early Transcendentals by James Stewart, 8th edition or UCI Custom Edition, 8th edition.

Students have the option of purchasing the text in a variety of formats from the UCI Bookstore. You can purchase the book as (1)a custom paperback book just containing the Single Variable Calculus part of the book, (2) a hardback book containing the full Single and Multivariable Calculus text, or (3) an e-copy of the book accessible online or as a one-time download. If you will be taking Math 2D and 2E later, you should purchase option (2) or (3). All three options come with an access code for a complete online textbook, including interactive applets, plus an online student solution manual.

*If you would like to purchase your Calculus book somewhere other than the bookstore, please be aware that it is your responsibility to ensure you purchase the correct text. Do not expect your instructor to assist you with trying to match up a different textbook.

Below are suggested sample syllabi for the Math 2A and 2B courses. These are suggested pacings only and it is expected that individual course sections may deviate somewhat from this schedule.

Common Final Exam

The Math 2A and 2B courses have a common final exam, meaning all students in the course take the same final exam at the same time, regardless of individual course section. The common final for Winter 2017 will take place on Saturday, March 17th, 1:30-3:30pm. Below is a set of suggested homework problems for Math 2A and 2B. This is meant to be a minimal set of problems for students to solve in order to help master the Calculus material. Your individual instructor may assign different problems.

Webwork Information

Webwork is an online homework system used to supplement the textbook homework and quizzes in the Math 2A and 2B courses. During the academic year, Webwork assignments will be given weekly starting the second week of classes (and the first week of classes in the summer). Students will have one week to complete each assignment and can retry problems as many times as necessary until they are correct.

Sample Midterms and Final Exams

Below are sample midterms and final exams that may be useful practice in preparation for course exams. These give examples of questions which could be asked on the actual exams, but the actual exams given in your class could be shorter or longer than these samples.  These are in no way meant to be a comprehensive review of course material and should NOT be used as the sole study mechanism. Individual instructors may slightly vary the content cutoff for the midterms, so be sure to attend class and review the relevant midterm material for your particular course.  

New in Fall 2017:  Math 2B no longer contains any questions on arc-length (section 8.1). This means you should ignore the indicated questions on the 2B sample exams below.

Final Exam Review Guide

Below are short review guides to help direct your studying for the common final exam in Math 2A and Math 2B. These guides are NOT comprehensive reviews of all the material covered on the final exam. The guide is simply a list of the sections covered and a list of some of the formulas which students may be expected to know to complete questions on the exam (e.g., trig identities, geometry formulas, etc.). There will be no calculators, notes or other references allowed on the final exam.

Solutions to the suggested problems, the practice midterms (the sample ones on the above page as well as the ones distributed in class), and the sample finals can all be found in a dropbox for our course on EEE.


This first course in calculus will explore limits and differentation, including some applications of derivatives. See the lecture schedule for more details. A confident grasp of precalculus mathematics, especially algebra, will be crucial to succeed in the course. Please talk to your instructor or TA if you find you need help brushing up; some helpful review material can be found near the bottom of the UCI Calculus Resources page.


We will be using the 8th or UCI custom edition of James Stewart's Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals as our textbook.

Your final letter grade will be determined by the following components, weighted as indicated.
Midterm 120%
Midterm 220%

Students will be assigned a letter grade based on the following scale: 97-100 A+, 93-96 A, 90-92 A-, 87-89 B+, and so on, without curving and without rounding scores (although individual exams and quizzes may be curved at the time they are graded).


There will be two 50-minute midterm exams, both given in class, the first on Friday, October 27 and the second on Wednesday, November 15. A missed exam will result in a score of zero, except in case of a verifiable emergency. Make-up midterms will not be offered under any circumstances. The first midterm will test material from Chapters 1 and 2, and the second midterm will material from Chapters 1-3.

The (cumulative) final exam will be held Saturday, December 9, 1:30-3:30pm, in SSH 100. Please refer to for the math department's policy on requesting a make-up final; such requests must be received by Friday, November 17 in order to receive consideration.

Note that during exams you will not be permitted any notes, nor the use of a calculator, cell phone, computer, abacus, slide rule, table of integrals, or similar aids. Seating may be assigned through a seating chart, and you will be required to present photo ID.


There will be eleven quizzes given throughout the quarter, always in discussion. As on the exams you will not be allowed a calculator or any notes. You should use the quizzes, which directly count for 10% of your grade, as a gauge of your preparedness for the exams. There will be no make-up quizzes, but your lowest score will be dropped.


You will receive and complete your assignments online using a system called Webwork, but for off-campus access you will need to be running VPN software. Assignments will be posted each Thursday, starting October 12, and typically due the following Friday by 11pm, according to this Webwork schedule. The homework counts for only a tenth of your grade, but it is one of the most important elements of the class. Typically the best way to prepare for the exams will be to do problems. In fact it is highly recommended that you also complete these optional, ungraded problems.

Resources and advice

As just emphasized, there is really no substitute for practice. Sample midterm and final exams along with other resources, including video lectures, can be found on the UCI Math 2A/2B page. Of course your instructor and TA are further resources. Don't be afraid to ask us questions in class or during office hours; we want to help you. Other people want to help you too: there's drop-in tutoring provided by the mathematics department as well as LARC tutoring.

Academic honesty
