My research has two main strands. The first focuses on the relationship between unconscious processes and social formations, in particular in relation to questions of cultural identity. Although this can be seen as belonging to a tradition of psychoanalytically-informed sociology and cultural studies, it is perhaps better located on the terrain of an emerging 'psychosocial' field of interdisciplinary enquiry. The second strand of my research addresses the making and remaking of heterosexual masculinities. In the past, much of this has dealt with masculinities and schooling. However, my more recent work has explored formations of heterosexual masculinity in the immediate post-war years via a detailed investigation of a previously under-explored component of Mass-Observation's 'Little Kinsey' sex survey, conducted in 1949.

I am, in addition, co-editor of the journal, Psychoanalysis, Culture and Society, and a series editor, with Stephen Frosh and Wendy Hollway, of the Palgrave book series, ‘Studies in the Psychosocial’. I am on the steering group of the Psychosocial Studies Network, a board member of the Association for the Psychoanalysis of Culture and Society, and sit on the advisory boards of Thymos: Journal of Boyhood Studies and Free Associations. I am also a member of and the International Research Group for Psycho-Societal Analysis.
