CHAPTER 32 FUNGI_ REVIEW 32.1 Defining Fungi  Fungi are part of the evolutionary lineage Opistokonts that also includes the Protist Choanoflagellates and animals. o All Opistokonts are heterotrophs 1. Identify characteristics that distinguish fungi from other eukaryotes. • As many as 1.5 million fungal species • Eukaryotic, single-celled or multicellular, sexual or asexual • Heterotrophic • Absorptive • Cell walls contain chitin • Reproduce by spores 2. The body of a fungus is a mass of connected hyphae • Hypha = single fungal cell; hyphae = multiple fungal cells that are in the form of filaments. • Mycelium – mass of connected hyphae – Some hyphae are continuous and multinucleate – Others are divided by septa (singular = septum) • These septa have pores so cytoplasm can flow between them. 3. Fungal cells (hyphae) can have more than one nucleus – Monokaryotic – 1 nucleus – Dikaryotic – 2 nuclei • Both genomes transcribed • Sometimes many nuclei intermingle in the common cytoplasm of the fungal mycelium (remember that the cytoplasm can flow between the individual hyphae) – Heterokaryotic – nuclei from genetically distinct individuals – Homokaryotic – nuclei are genetically similar to one another 4. Mitosis is NOT followed by cell division • Fungi have an unusual mitosis  Cells are linked and thus not relevant unit of reproduction  rather the nucleus is! – Nuclear envelope does not break down and re-form (like you learn about in cell bio classes)  instead, the spindle apparatus (the structure that pulls the replicated DNA apart) is formed within the nuclear envelope – Fungi lack centrioles 5. Fungi can reproduce both sexually and asexually • Asexual reproduction – mycelium splits in two parts and both parts survive – some fungi have spores that can germinate into multicellular spore-producing structures (essentially clones) • Sexual reproduction – fusion of two haploid hyphae of compatible mating types • In some fungi, fusion immediately results in a diploid (2 n ) zygote cell • Others, have a dikaryon stage (1 n + 1 n ) before parental nuclei form diploid nucleus • Spores are the most common means of reproduction among fungi

Tuesday 31/1/17:
TO DO: Practical activity to investigate the effect of a change in light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis.

TO DO: Correct homework questions. Cover the non-cyclic pathway 2 of the light stage.
DONE: Did the above. Showed the first 10 minutes of the crash course video on photosynthesis (including cyclic and non-cyclic pathways). Homework: question 2 of the sample exam questions on page 130.

Wednesday 25/1/17:

Tuesday 24/1/17:
TO DO: Students to finish off the investigation of digestive activity of germinating seeds and start Chapter 11: Photosynthesis.
DONE: Students added iodine to their Petri dishes of germinating broad bean seeds and observed results and finished writing up activity. Recapped the two types of germination. Started Photosynthesis. Covered the equations, requirements, and the basic process of photosynthesis. Homework: questions 1-6 page 129.
